Leadership Crisis in BJP: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns, Modi Faces Mounting Pressure
In a dramatic turn of events, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has submitted his resignation amid the ongoing parliamentary session, delivering a significant political blow to the Modi government. Dhankhar, who also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House), left a vacuum that has disrupted parliamentary proceedings and exposed internal vulnerabilities within the ruling establishment.
Political analysts and Indian media suggest that Dhankhar’s resignation is linked to attempts to suppress sensitive questions surrounding “Operation Sindoor.” The Vice President had previously assured the opposition of an open parliamentary debate on the matter, raising suspicions about the timing and motive behind his departure.
The crisis has deepened with senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat openly demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation. Notably, these calls for leadership change come from within the ruling party and its ideological core, signaling a growing lack of confidence in Modi’s leadership.
The RSS maintains a policy that no individual should hold a government office after the age of 75. Prime Minister Modi is set to reach that age in September 2025, which has prompted further calls for retirement from within party ranks. The leadership vacuum and rising internal dissent highlight a deepening crisis, with Modi increasingly perceived as a liability rather than an asset to the party.
At the same time, the opposition is pressing for answers on “Operation Sindoor” and the “Pahalgam Inquiry,” two sensitive issues that have dominated recent parliamentary discourse. Amidst this political turmoil, Modi’s proposed foreign visits to Tanzania and the United Kingdom have drawn sharp criticism, with opposition parties questioning his decision to travel abroad while the country grapples with serious internal concerns.
Ironically, the same “Operation Sindoor” that reportedly aimed to destabilize Pakistan now seems to have triggered political instability within India itself. The Modi government, once seen as invincible, now faces an internal reckoning.
With dissent rising from both within the BJP and its ideological backbone, and growing pressure from the opposition, India’s political landscape appears to be shifting. Modi, once celebrated as the “Vishwa Guru” (world leader), is now emerging as a central challenge for his own party’s future.
