US Announces Exit from UNESCO, Citing Palestinian State Recognition Against its National Policy
The United States has declared its decision to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), citing concerns over the agencyβs alleged promotion of anti-Israel sentiments.
A spokesperson for the US State Department, Timmy Bruce, stated that UNESCOβs policies foster social and cultural divisions, making continued membership contrary to Americaβs national interests. Bruce further criticized UNESCOβs recognition of a Palestinian state, describing it as a serious issue that conflicts with US policy and serves as a platform for spreading anti-Israel views within the organization.
The US withdrawal will officially take effect on December 31, 2026. The decision has been formally communicated to UNESCOβs Director-General Audrey Azoulay.
