Trump Brokers Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Deal; Pakistan Welcomes Agreement

09 August, 2025 12:11

US President Donald Trump has successfully mediated a preliminary peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough in the South Caucasus. The agreement, announced after separate meetings with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the White House on August 8, aims to end decades of hostility between the two nations.

A key component of the deal is Armenia’s decision to lease a transit corridor to the US, linking mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave. Named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), the corridor will be managed by Washington, ensuring Azerbaijan’s direct access while maintaining Armenia’s sovereignty in principle.

Both nations also initialled a broader peace framework, signaling Armenia’s shift toward Western economic ties and reducing reliance on Moscow. The move boosts US influence in the region, strengthens the Middle Corridor trade network, and diminishes Russia’s long-standing role.

Pakistan lauded the development, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif posting on X: “This landmark development marks the dawn of a new era of peace, stability, and cooperation in the South Caucasus, a region that has endured decades of conflict and human suffering. We congratulate President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan on this historic agreement that reflects wisdom, foresight and sagacity in charting a course for a peaceful future for their region.”

He reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for Azerbaijan, adding: “We also appreciate the facilitation role of the United States, under President Donald Trump, in bringing the two sides together and securing an agreement that opens new avenues for trade, connectivity, and regional integration. It is our hope that this spirit of dialogue will serve as an example for other regions facing protracted conflicts.”
