India’s Independence Day Being Observed as Black Day by Kashmiris Worldwide

15 August, 2025 12:11

Kashmiris across the world, including in Pakistan, are observing India’s Independence Day today (15 August) as Black Day, reaffirming their commitment to protest globally against what they describe as India’s oppression and violence.

According to the Kashmir Media Service, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has called upon the “brave and resolute” people of Jammu and Kashmir to observe a complete shutter-down strike in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The APHC stated that the day India marks its independence is, for Kashmiris, a grim reminder of slavery, forced occupation, and atrocities. “We observe this day as Black Day to let the world know that the Kashmiri nation is not a prisoner of Indian occupation but is seeking freedom,” the statement read.

Kashmiri representatives maintain that their demand for self-determination is in line with United Nations resolutions. By observing Black Day, they aim to press the international community to fulfill its responsibilities toward resolving the dispute.

Following the Hurriyat call, Indian forces reportedly launched raids, arrested dozens of young men, and suspended internet services in the Valley. Despite the clampdown, Kashmiri youth have put up Black Day banners, black flags, and Pakistani flags in various locations. Anti-India slogans and pro-freedom wall chalkings have also been reported from several areas of Occupied Kashmir.

A day earlier, on 14 August, Hurriyat leaders observed Pakistan’s Independence Day as a Day of Thanksgiving, extending heartfelt congratulations to the Pakistani nation. Pakistan celebrated its 78th Independence Day yesterday.
