US Suspends Trade Talks With India, Scheduled Visit to New Delhi Canceled

17 August, 2025 10:16

The United States has suspended trade negotiations with India, canceling trade negotiators’ planned visit to New Delhi that was scheduled for later this month.

According to CNBC, citing Indian broadcaster NDTV Profit, the visit was initially set for August 25–29 but is now expected to be rescheduled.

The development comes as trade relations between Washington and New Delhi remain tense. US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% additional duty on Indian exports, alongside another 25% punitive tariff on India’s purchases of Russian oil, which is expected to take effect on August 27.

While both sides remain in contact, a new timeline for talks has yet to be decided. Trump’s combined 50% tariff rate on India ranks among the highest levied on any US trading partner, drawing a strong response from New Delhi.

India has criticized the move as unfair, pointing out that the U.S. and the European Union continue trading with Russia. Earlier this month, India’s Ministry of External Affairs noted that unlike India, those countries’ trade with Russia is not driven by national necessity.

Neither India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry nor the Office of the US Trade Representative responded to CNBC’s requests for comment.

The US remains India’s largest export destination. Official data shows that in the financial year ending March 2025, about 20% of India’s total exports—worth $86.51 billion—were shipped to the United States.
