Portugal Announces Plan to Officially Recognize Palestine as State

Portugal has joined the growing list of countries recognizing Palestine as an independent state.

According to a statement from Portugal’s Foreign Ministry, the official recognition will be announced on September 21.

Earlier this week, the Portuguese Foreign Minister, during a visit to the UK, had mentioned that the country was considering the move. Now, the decision has been confirmed.

Several other countries—including France, the UK, Australia, Canada, and Belgium—have already declared their intent to recognize Palestine as a state. A formal announcement is expected at the United Nations General Assembly later this month.

This move is seen as part of a wider international effort to support a two-state solution and push for peace in the Middle East.
