Resistance Surges in Manipur as Armed Attack Targets Indian Army Convoy

23 September, 2025 11:58

Manipur: Tensions continue to rise in India’s northeastern state of Manipur, where the security situation has deteriorated further following a major attack on an Indian Army convoy. The incident highlights growing resistance in the region against the central government’s rule.

According to Indian media reports, a convoy of the 33 Assam Rifles came under heavy attack near Nambol, a town in Manipur. Unknown armed individuals ambushed the convoy on a highway, resulting in the deaths and injuries of several soldiers. The convoy was reportedly traveling from Patsol Company Operating Base to Nambol Company Operating Base at the time of the assault.

While no armed group has claimed responsibility so far, the attack reflects the intensifying armed struggle by local resistance forces against the Indian military presence in the region.

For months, Manipur has been experiencing armed unrest and resistance against what local groups describe as the oppressive policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Many local youth have reportedly joined resistance movements, and attacks on Indian military convoys and checkpoints have increased. The recent escalation has exposed weaknesses in Indian military control and challenged official claims that the situation is under control.

Indian media confirmed that search operations are currently underway in and around Nambol to locate the attackers. Security forces have launched raids in nearby areas in an attempt to restore control.

Observers say that the intensifying resistance shows that many people in Manipur no longer recognize the authority of the central government. The dream of freedom remains alive among sections of the local population, despite strict military control and crackdowns.

Analysts argue that force and repression have failed to suppress local aspirations and that growing resistance is a sign of a deep political and ethnic crisis in the region.
