Is Donald Trump releasing a coin with his face? Here’s a details

04 October, 2025 16:01

The U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach has confirmed via social media that the initial draft designs for a special $1 coin, set to be released in 2026 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, will feature the likeness of President Donald Trump on both sides.

The rumors surrounding the coin’s design were verified when Treasurer Beach responded to a social media post showcasing the first draft images. His confirmation on X stated, “No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real.” Beach further added that more information would be shared soon but noted that the current U.S. government shutdown was delaying further announcements, saying, “Looking forward to sharing more soon, once the obstructionist shutdown of the United States government is over.”

Following Beach’s announcement, the Treasury Department also confirmed the authenticity of the draft designs through a spokesperson, who remarked, “While a final $1 dollar coin design has not yet been selected to commemorate the United States’ semiquincentennial, this first draft reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles,” according to a report.

The draft design reportedly features a side profile of President Trump on one side, while the reverse shows an image inspired by the aftermath of an assassination attempt on Trump, emblazoned with the phrase “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT,” as reported.

However, the announcement has sparked a heated online debate over the legality of featuring a sitting President on U.S. currency. According to People Magazine, which referenced U.S. legal provisions, a living or recently deceased President cannot be depicted on coins until two years after their death. The magazine cites the Cornell Law School’s website stating, “No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President.”

Despite these legal provisions, Reuters highlighted that the issue is complex. Legal experts suggest that the ban specifically applies to images portraying the President’s “head and shoulders” or “bust” on the reverse side of a coin. However, the draft design featuring Trump may be interpreted as a broader portrayal, potentially allowing it to bypass this restriction.

As the debate continues, the final decision on the coin’s design remains pending, with many watching closely to see if President Trump will officially be featured on the historic commemorative $1 coin.
