Canadian PM Apologizes to Trump Over Anti-Tariff Ad

01 November, 2025 12:44

Gyeongju: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Saturday that he apologized to US President Donald Trump over a political advertisement opposing tariffs. He also told Ontario Premier Doug Ford not to run the ad.

Carney made the apology privately to Trump during a dinner hosted by South Korea’s president on Wednesday. “I did apologise to the president,” Carney said, confirming Trump’s earlier comments.

The ad, commissioned by Ford, used a clip of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan warning that tariffs cause trade wars and economic harm. Carney said he reviewed the ad with Ford before it aired but opposed using it.

Following the ad, Trump increased tariffs on Canadian goods and paused trade talks with Canada, escalating tensions between the two countries.
