Zohran Mamdani Makes History as New York City’s First Muslim Mayor

05 November, 2025 09:08

New York: Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Muslim, has made history by winning the New York City mayoral election, becoming the first Muslim and one of the youngest mayors in U.S. history.

According to official results, Mamdani secured 49.6% of the vote, defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who received 41.6%, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa finished third with nearly 8%. Analysts say Sliwa’s presence likely split votes that could have gone to Cuomo, benefiting Mamdani.

In his campaign, Mamdani promised to freeze rents, create city-run grocery stores, and make public buses free, gaining strong support from progressive voters across New York.

His victory marks a major shift in U.S. urban politics, highlighting the growing influence of progressive and minority candidates.

Mamdani has also been outspoken on foreign policy issues. During his campaign, he accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and said that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits New York, he should face an arrest warrant for war crimes — a statement that drew both support and criticism.

Former Governor Cuomo, once considered a strong contender, saw his campaign weakened by sexual harassment allegations and controversy over COVID-19 nursing home deaths during his tenure. Despite support from major Democratic figures, he failed to regain voter trust.

This year’s elections saw a record voter turnout, with more than two million New Yorkers casting their ballots — the highest since 1969.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger became the state’s first female governor, defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier warned that he would block federal funding for New York City if Mamdani — a self-described Democratic Socialist — won the race. Despite this threat, Mamdani’s victory represents a historic moment for American diversity and democracy.
