Russia Challenges US at UN by Proposing Its Own Gaza Resolution
Donald Trump open to meeting Putin without Zelensky
Russia has submitted its own draft of a UN resolution on Gaza, creating a direct challenge to a US attempt to pass its version in the Security Council. Reuters reviewed a copy of Russia’s draft on Thursday.
Last week, the United States formally shared its draft with all 15 members of the Security Council. The US says its proposal has support from regional partners. The American draft calls for a two-year mandate for a temporary governing body in Gaza and an international force to help stabilize the area.
In response, Russia’s UN mission circulated a note to Council members on Thursday afternoon. The note, also seen by Reuters, stated that Russia’s draft is “inspired by the US draft,” but aims for a more balanced outcome.
According to Russia, the purpose of its version is to help the Security Council adopt a “balanced, acceptable, and unified approach” that can lead to a sustainable halt in the fighting.
Russia’s move highlights the growing divide within the Security Council as global powers debate how to handle the Gaza crisis.
