Canada Visa 2025 — IRCC Issues Advisory to Protect Newcomers from Scams
The Canadian federal department, IRCC, has issued a crucial advisory for newcomers to safeguard them against visa scams and financial fraud. In its message, IRCC emphasized: “As a resident, you have rights and freedoms protected by Canadian law.”
The advisory, posted on IRCC’s official Facebook page, warned that immigration officers will never request payment via email, phone, or bank transfers. “If someone claiming to be from IRCC requests payment this way, it’s a scam!” it stated. Official payments must only be made online through the IRCC portal.
The advisory highlighted common scams that newcomers might face after arriving in Canada, including impersonation of government staff, phishing emails or texts, computer virus scams, fake contests or prizes, and tax-related scams. It reminded the public that no one can guarantee a job, visa, or permanent residence, adding: “Only immigration officers in Canada at Canadian embassies, high commissions and consulates can decide to issue a visa.”
IRCC clarified that all processing fees are standardized globally, with local currency conversions based on official exchange rates. The department also reinforced safe online payment practices and stressed that official instructions must be followed when paying fees.
Furthermore, IRCC outlined signs of fraudulent activity and warned applicants that officers will never ask them to:
- Deposit money into personal bank accounts
- Use prepaid cards, Western Union, MoneyGram, or gift cards
- Make immediate payments under threats of deportation or harm
- Offer “special deals” or expedited processing in exchange for extra payments
- Contact applicants via free email services or social media
- Request private information outside official verification purposes
Applicants are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to the authorities. IRCC reassured the public that all official communications regarding fees and services will be conducted solely through verified channels.
