Saudi Arabia stops charging work permit fees for these workers – new update

Saudi Arabia has introduced new rules to protect domestic workers and make the hiring process more fair and transparent. Under the new policy, employers are not allowed to take work permit fees, service transfer charges, or any employment-related expenses from domestic workers.

The Kingdom says this new framework is meant to protect the rights of both workers and employers. It sets clear guidelines for recruitment, job duties and legal protections, creating a more organized system for household employment.

Clear Rules for Employers and Workers

According to the new guidelines, workers must be fully informed about their job responsibilities before they arrive in Saudi Arabia.
Employers must also provide a written contract that clearly states:

  • Monthly salary

  • Job duties

  • Accommodation details

Saudi authorities have warned that labour laws will be implemented strictly. Employers who break their contracts can face fines of up to 20,000 riyals. They are also not allowed to give workers tasks that are not part of the agreed job role.

Rights and Safety Measures for Workers

Workers are advised to keep their passports safe, keep copies of important documents and immediately report any mistreatment.
The government has confirmed that domestic workers have the right to:

  • Monthly wages

  • Weekly rest

  • Medical care

  • Fair handling of complaints

The category of domestic workers includes:

Drivers, nurses, cooks, tailors, butlers, house managers, security guards, personal assistants, farmers, psychotherapists and even home coffee makers.
