Russian general killed in Moscow car bomb attack

A Russian general was killed on Monday after a car bombing in southern Moscow, according to Russia’s federal investigators. The blast seriously injured Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who was the head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff. He later died from his injuries.

Russian investigators said they are looking into different possible reasons behind the attack. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of inquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” said Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Ukraine Accused in Past Attacks

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine has been blamed for several attacks on Russian military officers and pro-Kremlin figures. Many of these incidents happened inside Russia or in occupied Ukrainian areas.

Earlier, in April, General Yaroslav Moskalik, a deputy of the Russian General Staff, was also killed in a car bombing near Moscow.

In December 2024, Ukraine’s security service claimed responsibility for an attack that killed Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, who was in charge of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces. He and his assistant, Ilya Polikarpov, were killed when a bomb hidden on an electric scooter exploded outside Kirillov’s apartment.

Other high-profile attacks include the killing of Russian military blogger Maxim Fomin in April 2023, when a statuette exploded inside a café in St. Petersburg. In August 2022, Daria Dugina, the daughter of ultranationalist thinker Alexander Dugin, was killed in a car bombing.
