Modi’s Foreign Policy Under Fire Amid Shifting Global Power Dynamics

09 January, 2026 18:07

Modi’s foreign policy is facing severe criticism for its perceived failure in the context of shifting global dynamics.

Critics argue that Modi’s approach, which they describe as steeped in Hindutva extremism, has been humbled by a series of diplomatic retreats at the global level. Following endorsements from international analysts, Indian newspapers have also begun acknowledging a sense of constant fear and uncertainty within India.

The Indian newspaper The Print highlights the diplomatic failures and the climate of fear spreading within the Indian state due to U.S. pressure. According to The Print:

  • The Indian Ministry of External Affairs is reportedly wary of U.S. President Trump’s derogatory language toward Modi.
  • Further increases in U.S. tariffs, stricter immigration laws, and visa cancellations have deeply unsettled the Indian public.
  • The Print notes that the U.S. openly supported Pakistan in the 1971 war and left India isolated.
  • The publication suggests that President Trump has caused shock and concern within the Modi administration by positioning himself as a close ally of Pakistan.
  • Furthermore, The Print claims the BJP made a serious mistake by categorizing Trump simply as a Muslim-hating extremist, noting that his close circle includes allies from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and other Muslim nations.

Additionally, the Indian magazine Force has revealed that India’s foreign policy has taken the wrong direction amid the changing balance of world powers.

According to experts, Trump’s harsh anti-India decisions have dealt a severe political and diplomatic blow to the Modi government. These experts have also characterized Modi’s “power-hungry” attachment to Russia as being at odds with current ground realities.
