Trump Administration Considers Cash Payments to Influence Greenland’s Future

09 January, 2026 09:26

The Trump administration is reportedly discussing the idea of offering direct cash payments to people living in Greenland. The goal would be to encourage support for separating from Denmark and forming closer ties with the United States, according to multiple sources familiar with the talks.

US officials have considered payments ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per person, though no final decision has been made. The discussions are still internal, and officials have not confirmed how such a plan would work or when it could be implemented.

Why Greenland Matters to the US

Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark with a population of about 57,000 people. The island holds strategic importance due to its location in the Arctic and its rich natural resources, including minerals used in advanced military and technology systems.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said Greenland is vital for US national security. He argues that the island plays a key role in Arctic defence and global geopolitics.

Strong Opposition From Greenland and Europe

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, strongly rejected the idea. In a social media post on Sunday, he said Greenland is not for sale and dismissed any discussion of annexation.

European leaders have also reacted sharply. Denmark and several major European countries released a joint statement this week, saying that decisions about Greenland’s future can only be made by Greenland and Denmark. They reminded Washington that Denmark and the US are NATO allies.

White House Response

When asked about the reports, the White House did not deny the discussions. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration is reviewing different options. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed he will meet Denmark’s foreign minister in Washington next week to discuss Greenland.

Danish officials declined to comment, while Greenland’s representatives in Washington did not respond to media inquiries.

Other Options Being Considered

Apart from direct payments, US officials are also discussing a Compact of Free Association (COFA). Similar agreements already exist between the US and Pacific island nations like Palau and Micronesia.

Under such agreements, the US provides economic aid and security support, while gaining military access and strategic influence. Greenland would likely need to become independent from Denmark before any such deal could move forward.

Public Opinion in Greenland

Polls suggest many Greenlanders support independence from Denmark. However, surveys also show strong resistance to becoming part of the United States. Economic uncertainty remains a major concern, as Greenland currently relies heavily on Danish financial support.

For now, the future of Greenland remains firmly in the hands of its own people.
