Shenzhen Hotel Guest Floods Building After Using Sprinkler as Clothes Rack, Video Goes Viral
A hotel guest in Shenzhen, China, has been billed 150,000 yuan (around USD 21,000) after causing extensive water damage by using a fire-suppression sprinkler as a makeshift clothes rack. Seeking a convenient spot to dry laundry, the guest hung damp garments on the sprinkler head, inadvertently triggering its heat-sensitive mechanism.
The activated system discharged thousands of litres of water, flooding the room and seeping into multiple floors below. The deluge damaged wallpaper, flooring, and electrical installations, leaving hotel staff with significant repair costs.
A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, showing water spraying across the room after the guest’s misguided attempt. The clip also shows the guest attempting to use a fire extinguisher to hang clothes, which further intensified the chaos.
“This unusual incident highlights the importance of respecting fire safety equipment,” authorities said, as the hotel confirmed the guest would cover the repair expenses.
