Who Is Tommaso Cioni’s Frien Walter Goncalves? Is He the Kidnapper of Nancy Guthrie?

11 February, 2026 11:41

Tucson, Arizona — February 11, 2026: The search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, continues as authorities investigate her disappearance from her Tucson home on January 31, 2026.

The FBI recently released doorbell camera footage and high-resolution photos of a masked person at Nancy’s residence, sparking public speculation about potential suspects. Among those discussed online is Walter Goncalves, friend and bandmate of Nancy’s son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni.

Who Is Walter Goncalves?

Walter Goncalves is a guitarist and vocalist, best known as one of the founding members of the Tucson-based post-punk band Early Black, formed in 2007 alongside drummer Dominic Evans and bassist/vocalist Tommaso Cioni—who is also married to Nancy Guthrie’s daughter, Annie. Goncalves has generally stayed out of public scrutiny until February 2026, when his name began circulating in connection to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

Why Is He Being Speculated as the Masked Kidnapper?

Online speculation on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) links Goncalves to the FBI-released footage because of his connection to Tommaso Cioni and perceived physical similarities to the masked individual. The footage shows a person wearing a ski mask, gloves, and dark clothing, tampering with the doorbell camera and carrying a backpack. Some users noted that the masked figure’s eyes and build resemble Goncalves, though others argue that the physique and facial hair are a closer match to Tommaso Cioni.

Social media users have debated these similarities, with some suggesting minor differences (such as grooming) could account for inconsistencies. Others have cautioned against spreading unverified accusations:

“How about you let the experts do their job and stop trying to get internet fame—what if you are wrong? Do you have a lawyer?” one X user commented.

Connection to Tommaso Cioni

Tommaso Cioni, as Annie Guthrie’s husband, was reportedly one of the last people to see Nancy alive, driving her home after a family dinner on January 31, 2026. This proximity has led some to speculate online about the possible involvement of both him and his close friend, Walter Goncalves.

However, authorities have not named any official suspects. Both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department emphasize that the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed against anyone linked to the case.

Current Status of the Investigation

Despite the release of images and video, investigators have not located Nancy Guthrie, and her family continues to hope for a safe resolution. The public is urged to share credible tips but avoid speculating or making unverified accusations against individuals.
