On Monday, February 16, 2026, authorities identified Kenneth Terrell Johnson as the suspect in a deadly shooting in Beech Grove. The incident resulted in the death of one police officer and left another officer injured near a local high school.
Who Is Kenneth Terrell Johnson?
According to the Indiana State Police, Kenneth Terrell Johnson is 47 years old, about 6 feet tall, and weighs approximately 165 pounds. Police described him as having a slender build and said he was last seen wearing a royal blue hooded sweatshirt. Authorities warned that he is armed and dangerous.
Police said they received a 911 call at 5:37 p.m. reporting a disturbance at 140 Diplomat Court. Officers responded to the location, but the situation quickly escalated. Investigators stated that gunfire broke out shortly after police arrived at a nearby housing complex.
Officials allege that Kenneth Terrell Johnson opened fire on responding officers. Due to the danger, the scene was declared unsafe, and additional law enforcement units were called in.
At around 6:10 p.m., police closed Emerson Avenue from Churchman Avenue to Interstate 465. Drivers were asked to avoid the area while officers secured the scene and continued the search.
The Beech Grove Police Department confirmed that Brian Elliott, aged 33, was killed in the line of duty. He had served with the department for two years and previously worked with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.
Police said the injured officer is expected to survive. The department described Officer Elliott as a dedicated officer who had a strong connection to the Beech Grove community.
A large search operation is now underway. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department deployed helicopters, K9 units, and additional officers to locate the suspect.
Authorities have not shared any information about a possible motive. The investigation remains active, and police continue to urge residents to stay indoors and report any suspicious activity by calling 911.
