UK Authorities Detain Peter Mandelson in Epstein Probe
Peter Mandelson, the former British ambassador to the US, was detained by London police on Monday due to accusations that he had connections to the disgraced US businessman Jeffrey Epstein.
According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police, “a 72-year-old man has been arrested by officers on suspicion of misconduct in public office.”
Following police raids on Mandelson’s residences earlier this month, footage on UK television seemed to show him being driven from his north London house with a guy and a woman.
“He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, 23 February and has been taken to a London police station for interview,” the Met continued.
The arrest follows days after King Charles III’s younger brother, former Prince Andrew, was taken into custody in connection with a misbehavior in public office investigation that also involved the most recent disclosure of Epstein-related documents.
Important British politician Nelson Mandelson is under investigation for allegedly sending private documents to the late US sex offender Epstein while serving as a cabinet minister, especially during the 2008 financial crisis.
When earlier documents connected to Epstein revealed the depth of their acquaintance, Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed the former politician from his position as envoy to Washington last year.
The high-profile UK investigations are the consequence of the most recent Epstein files made public by the United States on January 30.
Mandelson was accused by Starmer of lying about the depth of his connections to the financier during the screening process for his appointment to Washington, and Starmer has expressed regret to Epstein’s victims.
However, Mandelson’s selection has caused a political uproar, since two of Starmer’s top advisers have quit due to the dispute.
Tens of thousands of emails, messages, and documents pertaining to Mandelson’s screening process will be made public by the government, which may increase pressure on the prime minister and other top ministers.
Earlier this month, Mandelson, a former European Union trade commissioner, resigned from the House of Lords, parliament’s unelected upper house.
According to police, two of his addresses—one in London and the other in the western English county of Wiltshire—were searched earlier this month by members of the Met’s specialized crime unit.
