Saturday, February 28, 2026 – Iran’s Intelligence Minister, Syed Esmaeil Khatib, has been reported martyred during massive missile attacks on Tehran carried out by the United States and Israel.

Background of Syed Esmaeil Khatib

Syed Esmaeil Khatib was a respected Iranian scholar and politician. He had been serving as Iran’s Intelligence Minister since August 2021, leading the ministry with a focus on national security and intelligence operations. His martyrdom marks a significant loss for Iran’s political and security leadership.

Details of the Strikes

According to Iranian sources, the attacks targeted multiple strategic locations in Tehran and surrounding areas, including:

  • Military centres and intelligence headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)

  • The residence of Iran’s Supreme Leader

  • Presidential offices

  • Civilian areas in Tehran and Qom

Israeli forces also reportedly targeted Isfahan, while explosions were reported near the Iranian Parliament building. During the strikes, Iran closed its entire airspace and mobilized emergency and defence teams to protect civilians.

Operation “Shield of Jews”

The Israeli military named the offensive “Operation Shield of Jews”, a preemptive operation they claim was meant to neutralize threats to Israel. Iranian officials condemned the strikes as a blatant violation of national sovereignty and emphasized Iran’s right to defend its territory and citizens.

Iran’s Response

Iranian authorities highlighted that the martyrdom of high-ranking officials, including Minister Khatib, strengthens national unity. They reaffirmed the country’s commitment to defending its people and sovereignty and vowed to respond decisively to foreign aggression.
