Modi’s Israel Visit Sparks Controversy Ahead of Iran Strikes; International Media and Indian Opposition Criticize

04 March, 2026 10:52

New Delhi / March 4, 2026: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel just days before the attacks on Iran has drawn widespread criticism from international media and opposition leaders in India. Analysts say the timing and political nature of the trip raise serious questions about India’s foreign policy and strategic priorities.

Global Media Questions Modi’s Timing

Several international outlets noted that Modi’s Israel visit, immediately preceding military action against Iran, embarrassed India on the global stage. Reports highlighted that Modi appeared to prioritize personal and political interests over national or regional diplomacy.

According to foreign media, Modi reassured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of possible support against Iran during his visit. Israeli journalist Etai Mack, writing for The Wire, described Modi’s role as a “cheap advertisement” for Netanyahu’s election campaign. Bloomberg also labeled Modi’s trip as “suspicious and diplomatically risky” given the regional tensions.

Some analysts questioned whether Modi’s visit aimed at securing behind-the-scenes guarantees for India’s Chabahar port and protecting business interests of prominent Indian groups such as the Adani Group, which has investments in Israel’s Haifa port and Iran’s Chabahar port.

Alleged Political Motives

Critics argue that Modi used the Israel visit to strengthen ties with Netanyahu and, indirectly, with former US President Donald Trump. Reports suggest Modi sought to curry favor with Trump via Netanyahu, while positioning himself as a strategic ally in the Middle East.

TRT World noted that Modi remained silent on Iran during the crisis, seemingly prioritizing political and business gains over diplomatic principles. Al Jazeera also reported that India provided indirect support to Israel during its operations in Gaza.

Indian Opposition Reacts

India’s opposition parties, including Congress, the Communist Party, and political leaders from Kashmir, openly criticized Modi’s visit. They accused him of abandoning traditional Indian foreign policy and undermining national credibility. Sonia Gandhi and J. Ram Ramesh said the trip marked a clear departure from India’s non-aligned stance.

Asaduddin Owaisi raised concerns about whether Modi had prior knowledge of the possible Iran strikes. The opposition questioned if business interests were prioritized over national dignity, especially regarding Modi’s handling of the Chabahar port and Adani Group investments.

Domestic Criticism and Protests

The visit sparked debate and protests across India, including in Kashmir, where governance issues have intensified under Modi’s administration. Analysts say Modi’s actions reinforced doubts about India as a reliable partner in international diplomacy.

Observers argue that Modi’s visit allowed Israel to gain political support while India’s strategic credibility suffered. The global and domestic scrutiny underscores growing concerns about Modi’s foreign policy decisions in a volatile region.
