Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei Becomes 3rd Supreme Leader of Iran

09 March, 2026 02:53

TEHRAN — In an unprecedented move that marks a historic shift for the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah  Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been named Iran’s new supreme leader. The decision, confirmed by reports circulating among Iranian political sources, follows the assassination of his father in a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike on February 28, 2026.

The selection process was conducted under intense pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to multiple sources. The Assembly of Experts, the clerical body constitutionally tasked with selecting the leader, reportedly held emergency sessions—some virtual—following the strike that killed the late Ayatollah.

The appointment has sparked internal dissent, as a segment of the assembly voiced strong opposition to the transition, warning against the perception of a “hereditary monarchy.” Critics of the appointment have pointed to Mojtaba Khamenei’s limited public clerical and jurisprudential standing, arguing it threatens the religious legitimacy required for the position of Vali-ye Faqih (Supreme Jurist). Despite these objections, the assembly’s leadership board proceeded with the vote, citing the urgent need to address the “decision-making vacuum” created by the ongoing war.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has long been regarded as one of the most powerful figures in Tehran, operating largely behind the scenes as a “gatekeeper” within his father’s office. His rise to power is seen by analysts as a victory for the IRGC, with whom he has maintained deep-rooted ties for decades, dating back to his service during the Iran-Iraq War.

For years, Mojtaba has been involved in coordinating security and military affairs. His supporters within the regime view his appointment as the most stable path forward during the current crisis, arguing that his familiarity with the security apparatus makes him uniquely positioned to lead a nation at war. Conversely, his critics and Western observers suggest his elevation signals that the regime’s most hardline security factions have effectively tightened their grip on power.
