Netanyahu ‘Extra Finger’ Video Sparks Online Conspiracy Theories, Social Media Claims AI-Generated

13 March, 2026 15:25

A short clip of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaking during the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict has sparked a wave of conspiracy theories. Some social media users claim that an apparent “extra finger” on his hand proves the video was generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

The “Extra Finger” Claim

The speculation started after users shared screenshots from Netanyahu’s 12 March address, zooming in on his left hand while he gestured. Some argued the frame showed six digits instead of five. Comments ranged from “Netanyahu’s hand clearly has six fingers — classic AI glitch” to “This proves the speech is AI-generated.”

While extra or distorted fingers can appear in AI-generated images, analysts say this clip likely shows normal motion blur and compression artefacts. Netanyahu’s hand moves quickly while speaking, and still frames can make fingers appear doubled or merged. No credible AI analysis has confirmed that the video is AI-generated.

Rumours Linked to Iran Strike Claims

The conspiracy gained attention because of earlier rumours about Netanyahu’s safety during the Israel-Iran escalation. An Iranian state-linked outlet claimed he may have been injured or killed, citing unnamed sources. Israeli officials quickly rejected these claims, and Netanyahu continued appearing in videos and making official statements.

Similar Claims About Jim Carrey

The Netanyahu clip echoes speculation about actor Jim Carrey earlier this year. After Carrey appeared at the César Awards in Paris, some suggested he had been replaced by a clone or body double. Carrey’s representatives dismissed the claims, and additional footage confirmed his appearance.

Deepfakes and Online Theories

The rise of AI-generated videos and deepfakes fuels such conspiracy theories. Analysts have flagged multiple altered images and videos online during the Israel-Iran conflict, but there is no verified evidence that Netanyahu has been injured, replaced, or digitally recreated. His office continues releasing statements and footage, and international media have reported on his recent remarks regarding the conflict.

The incident highlights how motion blur, video artefacts, and online speculation can quickly lead to viral conspiracy theories, even without factual evidence.
