Donald Trump Warns NATO of “Very Bad” Future Over Hormuz Security
U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that NATO faces a “very bad” future if its member nations fail to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit point for global oil that has been effectively shuttered amid the ongoing war with Iran. In a recent interview with the Financial Times, President Trump emphasized that because the United States has generously aided allies in conflicts such as the war in Ukraine, it is only appropriate for those who benefit from the strait—including various European and Asian nations—to contribute to its protection.
President Trump also stated that a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled for later this month, could be delayed if Beijing does not provide support to reopen the waterway. He noted that China receives a significant portion of its oil through the strait and should therefore be a constructive partner in ensuring its security.
On Saturday, President Trump officially sought international cooperation, calling on countries including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom to deploy warships to the region. While Israel is working closely with the United States to secure the strait, the broader international response to the President’s appeal has been muted. To date, no country has made a formal commitment to send naval vessels to the region in response to the request. Furthermore, while the President indicated that the United States is in contact with Iran regarding the situation, he expressed skepticism that Tehran is currently prepared for meaningful negotiations.
