Authorities in Iran have arrested dozens of individuals suspected of passing sensitive information to Israel, according to local media reports on Sunday, as Israeli and U.S. air strikes continue targeting sites across the country.
In northwestern Iran, the semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that 20 people were detained by the provincial prosecutor’s office on accusations of sending location details of Iranian military and security facilities to Israel.
Another 10 individuals were arrested in northeastern Iran, a region that has largely avoided the recent wave of air strikes. Some of those detained were accused of gathering intelligence on sensitive sites and economic infrastructure.
According to Tasnim, a provincial branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intelligence unit stated: “As the Zionist enemy (Israel) and the U.S. are attempting to invade Iran, they simultaneously activate mercenaries and spies to carry out riots as the next step.”
Meanwhile, the Student News Network reported that three people were arrested in the western province of Lorestan on charges of “seeking to disturb public opinion (…) and burn mourning symbols.”
Reports also suggest that Israel has begun targeting security checkpoints using information provided by informants on the ground, indicating a new phase in its military operations against Iran, according to a source familiar with Israel’s strategy.
The arrests come amid heightened tensions in Iran, where anti-government protests erupted in January, weeks before the current conflict involving the United States and Israel began. Iranian authorities had blamed both countries for fueling what they described as “violent riots” aimed at destabilizing the government.
