EU Urges US and Israel to End Iran War, Pushes for Diplomatic Resolution

The European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Tuesday called on the United States and Israel to end their war with Iran, stating that the EU is actively consulting regional governments to explore ways to bring the conflict to a close.

Speaking to Reuters in Brussels, Kallas said the EU is examining diplomatic options to halt the fighting and encourage negotiations between the involved parties.

“We have been consulting with regional countries like the Gulf states, Jordan and Egypt on whether proposals could be put forward for Iran, Israel and the United States to get out of this situation so that everybody saves face,” she said.

Kallas also suggested that the EU could help restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but emphasized that European involvement would most likely focus on diplomacy rather than military intervention.

Several European nations have declined U.S. President Donald Trump’s request to participate in a mission aimed at reopening the strategically vital waterway, citing unwillingness to risk troops in a conflict they did not initiate. Trump had warned that this reluctance could have implications for NATO.

“The problem with wars is that they are easier to start than to stop, and they often spiral out of control,” Kallas said, emphasizing that ending the war is in everyone’s interest. She noted that Europe is already feeling the impact of rising energy prices due to disruptions in shipping through the strait caused by the conflict.

Kallas proposed a diplomatic arrangement similar to the wartime Black Sea Grain Initiative to ensure safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. She confirmed discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stating that any solution would require agreement from regional countries, particularly Iran.
