Trump Upset Over Lack of NATO Help on Hormuz

17 March, 2026 02:51

The U.S. president recently expressed significant frustration with the international community, specifically criticizing allies for what he described as a lack of assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. During a press briefing in the Oval Office, President Trump taunted and threatened various nations, remarking that while the United States has historically provided extensive support for NATO, the alliance has failed to reciprocate in this moment of need. He emphasized that after spending billions of dollars on NATO’s collective defense, the organization is notably absent when it comes to defending American interests in the Persian Gulf.

In addition to his critique of NATO, President Trump voiced personal disappointment in British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Following initial military successes, the prime minister announced the deployment of fighter jets to the region; however, the president countered by stating that after the war had already been effectively won, he had no use for delayed gestures like aircraft carriers. He asserted that the United States has already dismantled the Iranian regime’s primary military infrastructure, including the destruction of boats laying mines and the total neutralization of Iran’s naval and air defenses. Consequently, the president argued that the responsibility for securing the waterway now falls on the countries whose economies rely most heavily on the oil passing through it.

The president further claimed that there is currently no leadership in Iran capable of conducting meaningful negotiations. He suggested that the new Supreme Leader of Iran might not even be alive and alleged that the previous leadership was involved in extensive fraud against the American people. Reiterating his stance on nuclear proliferation, he warned that violent regimes must never possess nuclear weapons, stating that if Iran had a nuclear bomb, it would undoubtedly use it against the United States. He characterized Iran as a destabilizing force that seeks to lead the Middle East into destruction through ongoing missile attacks on its neighbors.

When asked by journalists if the conflict would conclude within the week, President Trump remained non-committal on an exact date but expressed confidence that the war would end soon. He also noted that while he intended to visit China, he would remain in the United States for the time being, having requested that the visit be postponed for one month. This delay comes as he continues to appeal to China, Japan, and South Korea for naval cooperation. Highlighting the economic stakes, the President pointed out that 90 percent of China’s oil, 95 percent of Japan’s oil, and 35 percent of South Korea’s oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz, making it imperative for these nations to send their own naval fleets to secure the vital passage.
