Chris Nanos Faces Recall After Nancy Guthrie Disappearance Sparks Outrage

18 March, 2026 12:23

TUCSON, Arizona – March 18, 2026: The Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos, is under intense scrutiny following the disappearance of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie.

She went missing from her Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1, 2026. Despite more than six weeks of search, there has been no trace of her.

The public is furious over the handling of the case. Criticism of the sheriff has now escalated into a formal recall effort, raising questions about his credibility and past employment history.

Sheriff Chris Nanos Accused of Lying About Employment

Reports recently revealed discrepancies in Chris Nanos’ résumé. He resigned from his first police job with the El Paso Police Department in 1982 after several disciplinary issues. These included gambling off-duty, misuse of a siren, tardiness, and allegedly kicking a suspect, causing hospitalization. Nanos was suspended for 37 days and allowed to resign.

However, his public résumé states he left in 1984, two years later than the actual date. Officials call this a clerical error. But in light of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, critics say this raises doubts about his honesty and leadership.

Locals and political figures are questioning his credibility, especially since he initially dismissed Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law and daughter as “innocent victims” in the investigation.

Recall Effort Gains Momentum

On March 17, 2026, The New York Post reported that anger in Pima County has sparked a recall campaign against Sheriff Nanos. The effort was officially filed on March 12, 2026, requiring around 120,000 signatures in 120 days to trigger a vote.

Daniel Butierez, a Republican congressional candidate, said: “This is a bipartisan effort. He has been an embarrassment to Tucson and Pima County with the Nancy Guthrie case. Democrats and Republicans are both frustrated.”

Over 500 volunteers are actively gathering signatures. If successful, Nanos may have to resign or face a special election.

Latest Updates on Nancy Guthrie Investigation

Nancy Guthrie disappeared on February 1, 2026. Blood traces were found in her home, and the case is treated as a suspected abduction. FBI footage shows a masked individual trying to break in, but no suspect has been identified.

Authorities have asked neighbors to review security footage from January 11 and 24, 2026. They are checking cameras, homes, and local businesses for clues.

The FBI is also tracking Nancy’s last known movements. They have interviewed staff at a local Mexican restaurant where she filmed a segment for the Today show. A clear timeline of her activities before February 1 is being established.

Savannah Guthrie remains on hiatus from her Today show duties. NBC confirmed she will return eventually.

What Happens Next for Sheriff Chris Nanos?

The recall effort and résumé controversy have put Nanos’ career at risk. The public backlash may affect his future, especially with growing scrutiny of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s handling of high-profile cases.
