Iran War Enters Third Week as Trump Faces Growing Military and Political Challenges

22 March, 2026 12:30

As the Iran war enters its third week, President Donald Trump confronts mounting challenges that appear to be slipping beyond his control. Global energy prices are surging, US allies have resisted involvement, and more American troops are preparing for deployment despite the president’s earlier assurance that the conflict would be a “short excursion.”

In a defensive stance, Trump called other Nato countries “cowards” for refusing to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that the campaign is proceeding according to plan. However, his recent statement that the battle “was Militarily WON” clashes with the reality of a defiant Iran, which continues to disrupt Gulf oil and gas supplies while launching missile strikes across the region.

Trump, who campaigned on keeping the US out of “stupid” military interventions, now faces a conflict he neither fully controls militarily nor politically. Analysts warn that the lack of a clear exit strategy could imperil both his presidential legacy and the Republican Party’s prospects in the November midterm elections.

“Trump has built himself a box called the Iran war, and he can’t figure out how to get out of it,” said Aaron David Miller, a former Middle East negotiator for Republican and Democratic administrations. “That’s his biggest source of frustration.”

A White House official, however, defended the administration’s strategy, noting that many of Iran’s top leaders had been eliminated, its navy largely destroyed, and its ballistic missile arsenal significantly degraded. “This has been an undisputed military success,” the official said.

The limits of Trump’s power—diplomatically, militarily, and politically—have become increasingly apparent. Nato allies and other partners have refused to deploy their navies to secure the Strait of Hormuz, and some White House aides have suggested that Trump find an “off-ramp” to limit the scope of military operations.

Meanwhile, differences with Israel have surfaced, with Trump claiming he knew nothing about the Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, though Israeli officials insist the operation was coordinated with Washington. Analysts note that Trump now faces a crossroads: he could intensify the offensive, risking a long-term commitment, or declare victory and step back, potentially alienating Gulf allies while leaving Iran capable of continuing regional disruption.

The conflict has prompted the US to deploy thousands of additional Marines and sailors to the Middle East, though no decision has been made to enter Iranian territory. Rising gas prices and the deployment of more troops have begun to strain Trump’s once-solid support among MAGA loyalists.

“As the economics play themselves out,” Republican strategist Dave Wilson said, “people will start to say: ‘Why am I paying high gas prices again? … Why is the Strait of Hormuz now determining whether or not I can take a vacation next month?'”

Analysts cite miscalculations in anticipating Iran’s response, with Tehran using missiles and armed drones to counter US military superiority while largely shutting down the Strait of Hormuz.

“They failed to think through the contingencies around ways in which a conflict with Iran could go sideways, where it might not go according to the plan as they laid out,” said former US ambassador John Bass.

As the war drags on, Trump has struggled to control the narrative, publicly attacking the media and making unfounded claims of “treason” over coverage he perceives as undermining the war effort.

“He’s finding it difficult to drive the news cycle, as he’s accustomed to, because he still can’t explain why he’s taken this country to war and what comes next,” said Brett Bruen, a former foreign policy adviser in the Obama administration. “He seems to have lost his mojo on messaging.”
