Indian Godman Ashok Kharat Trends Nationwide as ‘Desi Epstein Files’ Scandal
A major controversy has erupted in India following the arrest of self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, also known as “Captain,” with the case rapidly gaining national attention and trending across social media platforms.
Initially emerging from a local investigation in Nashik, the case has expanded into a wide-ranging probe involving serious allegations of sexual exploitation, financial fraud, and the use of occult practices. Authorities detained Kharat on March 17, 2026, and the investigation intensified after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) reportedly recovered a pen drive containing dozens of objectionable videos.
According to officials, Kharat allegedly used his influence as a spiritual figure to manipulate and exploit women, often under the pretext of resolving personal or marital issues. He faces multiple charges, including repeated sexual assault, blackmail, and financial extortion using fear tactics linked to black magic.
Opposition leaders have referred to the case as the “Maharashtra Epstein Files,” pointing to the scale of digital evidence and suggesting a broader network of abuse involving influential individuals. The controversy has deepened as political figures released images allegedly showing Kharat in meetings with prominent personalities.
The scandal has already led to significant political consequences, most notably the resignation of Rupali Chakankar from her role as Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women and as a party leader.
Her resignation followed the circulation of viral videos, including footage showing her performing ritual acts for Kharat, which drew widespread criticism. Another clip reportedly showed her referring to him as a spiritual guide, further intensifying public backlash.
The case has also reignited debates over political accountability and past controversies involving Chakankar, with critics questioning her leadership role in a women’s protection body.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the investigation is being expanded to examine potential links between Kharat and government officials or influential figures. Authorities have also issued a lookout notice to prevent any attempt to flee the country.
As of the latest updates, the number of cases registered against Kharat has increased, including multiple charges of rape and financial crimes. He remains in police custody as investigators continue to gather evidence and more alleged victims come forward.
The unfolding case highlights serious concerns about abuse of power, exploitation under religious influence, and the potential involvement of high-profile individuals in one of the country’s most shocking scandals in recent times.
