Was Nancy Guthrie’s Crime Scene Tampered With? Ex-Sheriff Raises Concerns
The case of Nancy Guthrie is still unsolved, but now a new controversy has started. People are asking if important evidence was damaged because of mistakes at the crime scene.
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, has been missing for almost two months. The 84-year-old disappeared from her home in Tucson on February 1, 2025. So far, the investigation has not found any clear results.
Now, a former sheriff, Dr. Richard Carmona, has raised serious concerns. Speaking on Brian Entin Investigates, he questioned the actions of current sheriff Chris Nanos.
Carmona said it was unusual for a sheriff to reopen a crime scene. He explained that usually, lead investigators make such decisions only after all evidence is properly collected and recorded. He said:
“That’s not something a sheriff does. It’s the lead detective that’s out there that says, “We can open this area now because we have made this determination that all of the evidence necessary has been photographed, bagged, tagged, and so on.”
He also warned that opening a crime scene too early can create problems in court. He raised concerns about reports of food delivery at the scene, saying it could damage the case. He added:
“If you’re going to court and you’re making a case, a defense attorney says, ‘That crime scene was corrupted, you had people delivering pizzas. How do we know this is real evidence? Once it has been corrupted, that’s the end of it.”
On the other hand, Sheriff Chris Nanos has defended his team. In an interview with KVOA, he said he supports his department and their work. He said they are still actively following leads despite criticism. He stated:
“I don’t regret we let the crime scene go too soon or any of that, that’s just. Meanwhile, investigators and Guthrie’s family continue to urge anyone with information about her disappearance to come forward.”
After nearly 60 days, the case remains unsolved. There have been no arrests or main suspects so far. Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31, 2026, at her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson.
Authorities believe she may have been abducted. Blood found at the scene supports this concern. The FBI also released surveillance footage showing a masked person near her front door on the night she disappeared. However, this has not yet led to any major breakthrough.
The investigation is still ongoing as police and the family continue to search for answers.
