Trump says US could open Strait of Hormuz, ‘take the oil and make a fortune’

03 April, 2026 18:46

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States could reopen the Strait of Hormuz if given more time, as pressure grows to end the war with Iran.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said:
“With a little more time, we can easily OPEN THE HORMUZ STRAIT, TAKE THE OIL,& MAKE A FORTUNE,”

The war, which began nearly five weeks ago after a joint US-Israeli air attack, is continuing to create instability in the region and affect global markets.

Iran has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz in response to the attacks. This route normally carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas, so its closure has pushed energy prices higher and raised global concerns.

In a speech earlier this week, Trump repeated threats against Iran’s civilian power plants but did not give any timeline to end the conflict. This has led to further tension, with Iran warning of retaliation and global markets reacting negatively.

Global Impact of the Conflict

The ongoing war has caused major ups and downs in financial markets. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has also affected shipments of fertiliser, raising fears of a humanitarian crisis in parts of Asia and Africa.

Some ships have still managed to pass through the strait. A vessel from French company CMA CGM and another from Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines recently crossed the route, suggesting limited movement is still possible.

Meanwhile, global efforts are underway to restore normal shipping. Britain held a virtual meeting with around 40 countries, but no clear agreement was reached. Iran has proposed a system where ships must get permits and licences, a plan many countries may not accept.

Kaja Kallas said, “International law doesn’t recognise pay-to-pass schemes.”

The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote on a resolution to protect shipping in the area. However, China has opposed any military action, warning it could lead to further escalation.

The situation remains uncertain, with global markets and governments closely watching developments in the region.
