Global Oil Falls as US–Iran Ceasefire Eases Tensions

08 April, 2026 16:59

Following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a temporary ceasefire agreement with Iran, global oil prices plummeted on Wednesday, falling below $100.

While US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell more than 15% to almost $95, Brent crude fell more than 13% to settle at about $94 per barrel. The sharp decline is indicative of the market’s immediate response to the easing of geopolitical tensions, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route that transports about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.

Decline followed Washington’s announcement that it will halt military action for two weeks as long as Iran guarantees the Strait’s safe reopening. In response, Tehran acknowledged that regulated maritime transit could resume over the same time frame and that it would stop its own operations if strikes against it stopped.

Uncertainty persists despite the breakthrough. The ceasefire’s fragility is highlighted by reports from some sections of the Gulf that point to persistent security concerns, including alerts regarding drone and missile activities.

Although the agreement has lessened short-term supply concerns, analysts warn that longer-term threats still exist. Given worries that tensions around the Strait of Hormuz may reappear, markets may continue to account for a geopolitical “risk premium.”

Oil prices have already risen significantly because to the previous fighting, with one of the highest monthly increases ever recorded in March. Although the truce has brought only temporary relief, experts say a lot will rely on whether future talks result in a comprehensive and long-lasting accord.

As traders keep a careful eye on future developments, the market response thus far indicates cautious optimism but not total confidence.
