Pakistan’s Intervention Leads to Temporary US-Iran Peace Agreement — Trump Pauses Iran Strikes

08 April, 2026 08:45

In a sudden diplomatic turnaround, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, less than two hours before his self-imposed 8pm ET deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The decision followed talks with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military leaders, including COAS and CDF Field Marshal Asim Munir.

“This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE!” Trump posted on Truth Social, emphasizing that the arrangement comes after the US met key military objectives and is progressing toward a “definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran and PEACE in the Middle East.”

Trump confirmed Washington had received a 10-point plan from Iran, calling it a “workable basis” for negotiations and stating that most long-standing issues have been addressed. The ceasefire aims to allow both sides to finalize a comprehensive agreement to end hostilities.

Iranian state TV described the move as a “humiliating retreat,” while US and Israeli officials confirmed a suspension of strikes in support of the ceasefire.

Prime Minister Shehbaz praised the diplomatic efforts, noting that Pakistan requested Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks as a goodwill gesture. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed that negotiations will continue in Islamabad based on the 10-point plan, although Tehran stressed that the war would only formally end once details are finalized.

The announcement comes after intense US and Israeli strikes on Iranian infrastructure, escalating global oil prices and economic concerns. The ongoing war, now in its sixth week, has resulted in over 5,000 deaths and disrupted nearly a fifth of global oil supply passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump’s abrupt reversal reflects growing international pressure and the potential for diplomacy to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
