US Sympathy Shifts Toward Palestinians as Criticism of Israel Grows

A new survey shows a clear shift in public opinion in the United States, where more people are now expressing negative views about Israel. The change is strongest among younger Americans, according to recent data.
A report by the Pew Research Center reveals that nearly 60 percent of US adults now hold an unfavorable opinion of Israel. This marks a sharp increase compared to previous years.
The survey highlights a strong political split on this issue. Among Democrats, about 80 percent said they have a negative view of Israel. In comparison, 41 percent of Republicans shared the same opinion.
This gap shows that the issue is becoming more politically sensitive in the United States. Experts say it reflects growing divisions in American politics.
The biggest change has been seen among younger people. Around 70 percent of Americans aged 18 to 49 now have a negative view of Israel.
Among young Democrats, the number is even higher, reaching 84 percent. Meanwhile, 57 percent of young Republicans also expressed criticism.
In contrast, people aged 50 and above are less critical. This shows a growing difference in opinion between generations.

Negative Views Rising Over Time
The report also shows how opinions have changed over the years. In 2022, only 42 percent of Americans had a negative view of Israel. This number increased to 53 percent in 2025, and now it has reached nearly 60 percent in 2026.
This steady rise suggests a major shift in public thinking.
Criticism of Israeli Government Policies
The survey found that about 59 percent of Americans also have a negative opinion of the Israeli government. Many believe that Israel may be going too far in its military actions.
More than one in four Americans said Israel’s actions in the war are excessive. This view has grown stronger after recent events in Gaza.
Public Sympathy Is Also Changing
Recent surveys suggest that sympathy among Americans is shifting as well. In 2026, about 46 percent of people said they sympathize more with Palestinians.
Only 28 percent said they support Israel more. This marks a significant change compared to past decades.
Reasons Behind the Shift
Experts believe several factors are driving this change. These include:
- Media coverage of conflicts in Gaza and the Middle East
- Increased awareness of human rights issues
- Influence of social media and alternative viewpoints
- A different global perspective among younger generations
