Pakistan’s Mediation Process Facing Difficulties But Remains Active: Abbas Araghchi

15 May, 2026 15:42

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for friendly countries, while those considered hostile will be restricted. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, he clarified that Iran is not responsible for any disruptions in the strategic waterway and emphasized that arrangements regarding the strait are being managed jointly by Iran and Oman under a coordinated system.

Araghchi strongly criticized the United States, saying that contradictory messages from Washington have complicated diplomatic negotiations. He claimed that the US failed to achieve its objectives during a recent 40-day conflict and is now attempting to resume talks from a weakened position. According to him, Iran has never initiated war but has only acted in self-defense.

The Iranian foreign minister further stated that trust in the United States remains low, especially after alleged attacks during negotiation periods. However, he added that Iran remains open to dialogue if the US demonstrates genuine seriousness in diplomatic engagement.

Addressing global institutions, Araghchi said that the United Nations Security Council represents global inequality and requires urgent and comprehensive reforms to reflect fair international governance.

On regional diplomacy, he highlighted Pakistan’s mediation efforts, stating that Pakistan’s role as a mediator has not failed and that Iran welcomes all positive diplomatic initiatives aimed at stability in the region. He also urged India to define the future direction of its relationship with Iran.
