Iran-US Officially Sign Memorandum of Understanding

18 June, 2026 17:22

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the document was signed digitally and that a previously discussed signing ceremony in Switzerland would no longer take place.

Baghaei said Tehran deliberately sought signatures from the highest-ranking officials of both countries to strengthen the political weight of the agreement and increase the costs of any future violation.

A U.S. official separately confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the memorandum on Wednesday, following earlier digital endorsements by other representatives involved in the negotiations.

The memorandum is intended to end hostilities between the two countries and establish a framework for further negotiations on issues including sanctions relief, maritime security, and Iran’s nuclear program. While the agreement is now in force, officials from both sides have indicated that additional talks will be needed to finalize longer-term arrangements.

The development marks one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs between Tehran and Washington in years and opens the door to a new phase of negotiations aimed at reducing tensions across the Middle East.
