06 October, 2026 14:34

Ethiopia has formed a new federal government after the House of Peoples’ Representatives elected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to serve another five-year term.

The first regular inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives was held in Addis Ababa, marking the formal formation of the new Federal Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Abiy Ahmed was elected prime minister following the country’s 7th General Elections, which were conducted peacefully and involved more than 54 million registered voters.

The Prosperity Party secured 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives. Voting was held across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 constituencies for the federal parliament and 638 for regional councils.

International observer missions, including representatives from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, endorsed the electoral process as transparent.

In his inaugural remarks, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the election process had strengthened Ethiopia’s democratic culture despite the challenges faced by the country.

He stressed that political parties may win or lose elections, but Ethiopia itself has no losers, saying the country’s future depends on unity and collective progress.

Abiy Ahmed also called for Ethiopians to work together to overcome national challenges, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and cooperation.

The prime minister said Ethiopia’s influential position in East Africa was built on the country’s own strength, resilience and popular foundation. He added that Ethiopia would continue to play a leading role in promoting regional peace and stability.

Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Oumer H. Oba, congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the parliamentary leadership and members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives on taking their official oaths for the new five-year term.

The ambassador said the formation of the new government reflected the strength of Ethiopia’s democratic institutions and the people’s commitment to democratic norms and values.

He also wished Ethiopia continued peace, prosperity and development, along with greater national unity and social cohesion.
