Global Criticism Grows Over Indian Police Crackdown on Gen Z Protests
Indian police are facing strong international criticism over the alleged use of excessive force against Gen Z protesters demonstrating against the Election Commission and the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to international media outlet Al Jazeera, protests by Indian youth over alleged links between the Modi government and the Election Commission are growing in intensity.
The crackdown has also reportedly raised concerns over the treatment of journalists. The British broadcaster reported that a female journalist was allegedly subjected to sexual harassment by Indian police during the protests.
According to Indian newspaper The Hindu, around 500 young protesters were detained on the third day of demonstrations as authorities sought to suppress calls for the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner.
International human rights experts have said that the police crackdown against peaceful protesters has raised serious questions about democratic values in India.
