Pakistan-Mediated US-Iran Technical Talks To Be Held Tomorrow In Bürgenstock: FO

20 June, 2026 20:03

Pakistan announced on Saturday that technical-level talks between the United States and Iran will take place tomorrow (Sunday) in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, as Islamabad intensifies its diplomatic efforts to keep the peace process moving forward.

“Representatives of the United States and Iran, along with mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, will participate in the discussions,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The Foreign Office further stated that Pakistan would continue to “facilitate the process in its role as mediator,” in order to advance the understandings reached between Tehran and Washington under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding.

This development comes just days after the US and Iran electronically signed the MoU aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump confirmed the signing on June 15, stating that the agreement included provisions related to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports.

Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the agreement on behalf of their respective nations, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later signed the Islamabad MoU in his capacity as mediator, formally finalising the deal.

Iran’s Negotiating Team Heads To Switzerland

Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that Tehran’s negotiating team has departed for Switzerland to discuss the implementation of the agreement reached with the US to end the Mideast conflict.

“Iranian negotiators have left for Switzerland,” state news agency Irna reported, citing foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, who warned that the deal was “in trouble.”

“The other side must take the necessary measures as soon as possible. Otherwise, the entire understanding will be in trouble,” Baqaei said.

US Vice President Expected In Switzerland

On the American side, Vice President JD Vance stated that he expects to travel to Switzerland soon for talks with Iran. This comes even as Tehran’s military leadership was reported to be planning the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing alleged ceasefire violations by the US and Israel.

Iran’s top joint military command, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, stated that the waterway — a critical route for global oil shipments — would be shut to vessel traffic, citing alleged breaches of the ceasefire agreement by the US and Israel, according to Iran’s Mehr state news agency.

The command described the closure as the “first step” in response to what it called violations of commitments, warning that further measures would follow if “aggression” continued.

This report from Mehr emerged shortly after Vance told Fox News in an interview that he remained confident the ceasefire under Washington’s 14-point deal with Tehran would hold, adding that he had seen no evidence confirming the closure of Hormuz.

Talks Resume After Earlier Postponement

A day prior, American media outlets reported that US envoy Steve Witkoff was en route to Switzerland for talks, after previously scheduled US-Iran negotiations set for Friday were postponed.

According to Axios, citing an unnamed US official, Witkoff was already travelling to Switzerland on Friday. Trump’s envoy Jared Kushner was also expected to join the talks in Switzerland, CNN reported, citing a US official, while Axios reported that Kushner had already arrived.
