US launches fresh strikes after Iran targets ship in Strait of Hormuz

On Sunday, The United States threw fresh strikes on Iran after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired at a container ship traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest attack comes after days of increasing military confrontations with Iran. Rising tensions prompted President Donald Trump to announce that the ceasefire had ended. The conflict began on February 28 with US and Israeli military strikes. Despite the tensions, Trump said negotiations are still possible.

As per Iran statement, it shut the Strait of Hormuz after stopping a ship that it claimed was traveling through an unauthorized route. Iran warned of a severe response that any retaliation would trigger a harsh response.

The military of US recognized the container as the M/V GFS Galaxy, it registered in Cyprus. As per CENTCOM, the ship constant major damage to its engine room, and one civilian crew member is unaccounted for.

Strait of Hormuz Returns to the Center of the Conflict

The clash has troubled the Gulf region, as Iran’s barricade of the Strait of Hormuz has affected global oil and gas prices to rise, hitting pressure on the global economy. Higher gasoline prices are evolving as a political concern for President Donald Trump ahead of the November congressional elections.

Iran said several ships tried to pass through the strait using unauthorized routes despite repeated warnings. The Revolutionary Guards announced that the waterway, which normally carries around one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, will remain closed until what they called “the end of US interference in the region.”

About an hour after Iran released its statement, the latest strikes began at 7:15 p.m. Eastern Time (2315 GMT) on Saturday, reported by US Central Command. Tehran cautioned that any US response to the ship incident would lead to attacks on more American military bases in the Middle East.

The strikes were ordered by President Donald Trump. The White House did not immediately comment as per CENTCOM said.

Diplomatic Push Continues Despite Military Acceleration

As per US official reported, Washington wants Tehran to end attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and to allow free navigation without transit charges.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has accused Washington of violating the ceasefire agreement. In a post on X on Friday, he said, “There can only be mutual compliance.”

Earlier this week, the United States revoked the license allowing the sale of Iranian crude oil after three commercial tankers from Qatar and Saudi Arabia came under attack. In response, the US carried out strikes on Iranian targets, and Iran later launched attacks on US military sites in Gulf countries.

Although Iran has not officially claimed responsibility for the recent attacks on ships, analysts believe Tehran uses such incidents to strengthen its position in negotiations.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran, the United States, Qatar, and Pakistan had agreed to hold talks. Mediators were reportedly trying to arrange a meeting while Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was visiting Oman, which is continuing efforts to help end the conflict.
