Taliban Increase Restrictions on People in Herat: Report

15 July, 2026 13:13

The New York Times has reported that the Taliban have intensified restrictions and crackdowns on people in Herat, Afghanistan.

According to the report, Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada has ordered stricter enforcement of the group’s policies in the city.

The report says women are being arrested over their clothing, while men are being detained over beard-related rules.

Many women have limited leaving their homes because of fear of the Taliban, affecting their daily lives.

According to the United Nations, at least 30 women were arrested in just two days for alleged dress code violations. Local human rights groups say the total number of women detained in Herat has exceeded 200.

The report also says Taliban forces used violence against protesters who demanded “work, education and freedom.”

The crackdown has reportedly affected business activity in Herat, while many parents have stopped sending their daughters to school because of security concerns.

During Ashura, the Taliban also restricted religious ceremonies and processions held by the Shia community.

The report says Afghanistan’s Shia community continues to have little representation in the Taliban-led government, while concerns over discrimination remain.

According to the New York Times, the Taliban’s stricter policies are increasing public fear and unrest in Herat.
