Several Countries Step Up Crackdown on Illegal Afghan Migrants
Several countries have stepped up crackdowns on illegal Afghan migrants, with many arrests reported in recent days.
According to the Afghan newspaper Hasht-e Subh, Poland arrested 71 illegal migrants, including several Afghan nationals.
Polish Border Guards said the operations were carried out in areas near the borders with Lithuania and Belarus. Polish authorities said the detained migrants would be handed over to Lithuania after legal procedures were completed.
Meanwhile, Turkish police detained 20 Afghan nationals living illegally in the city of Bolu, according to Afghan International.
Turkey’s immigration agency said it arrested 19,574 Afghan nationals during the first six months of this year.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) says the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, poverty, and human rights restrictions are among the main reasons why millions of Afghans have left their country.
The recent arrests show that many countries are increasing action against the illegal presence of Afghan migrants.
