Trump, Canadian PM Agree to Speed Up Talks as US Trade Tensions Continue

21 July, 2026 21:11

Canadian Prime Minister held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which both leaders agreed to accelerate negotiations in the coming days. The discussion comes amid ongoing trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

Trump had previously announced a 50 percent tariff on Canadian products, a move that raised concerns over the future of economic relations between the two neighboring countries. The latest contact focused on continuing dialogue and resolving outstanding issues.

During the conversation, Trump also commented on regional developments, saying the United States and Lebanon maintain good bilateral relations. He said Washington would provide significant assistance to Lebanon, which he described as a country that has faced decades of instability.

The US president also addressed developments involving Iran, saying Tehran wants negotiations but claiming that Washington is not currently interested in talks. He warned that any attempt to block Bab al-Mandab or close the Red Sea would lead to necessary measures by the United States.

Trump said he held a productive discussion with the new British prime minister and reviewed several areas of cooperation. The talks included bilateral relations, trade, defense partnerships, and issues related to North Sea oil.

The US president added that Washington would continue cooperation with the United Kingdom on various matters. He said discussions also covered security concerns, including the removal of mines from the Strait of Hormuz and maintaining stability in key maritime routes.
