Qalibaf Mocks US Treasury Chief’s ‘Economic D-Day’ Sanctions Rhetoric

26 August, 2026 07:30

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf has ridiculed US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s description of Washington’s latest sanctions against Iran as an “Economic D-Day,” highlighting what he called a contradiction in Bessent’s own remarks. Qalibaf said Bessent invoked the historic Allied invasion of Normandy before acknowledging, in response to a reporter, that he would not want to “blow up the global financial system” through further economic pressure.

In a post on X, Qalibaf sarcastically wrote: “Him: ‘Economic D-Day.’ Also him, five seconds later: ‘Why would I want to blow up the global financial system?’” Addressing Bessent directly, he added, “Sir this ain’t Normandy, this is improv night and you forgot your own script,” mocking what he portrayed as Washington’s conflicting approach to sanctions and their potential consequences for the global economy.

Qalibaf’s comments came after the United States and Israel failed to achieve their stated objectives during their latest aggression against Iran, which lasted from February 28 to April 7. The offensive failed to overthrow Iran’s Islamic establishment or irreversibly undermine its defensive capabilities, while Iranian forces responded with at least 100 waves of attacks before US President Donald Trump announced a unilateral ceasefire.
