US Draws Up New Military Plan to Block Iran’s Missile and Radar Reconstruction in Strait of Hormuz

WASHINGTON: The United States is considering limited military strikes aimed at preventing Iran from rebuilding missile and radar systems around the Strait of Hormuz, according to US media reports.

The proposed operations would focus on Iranian military capabilities that Washington believes could threaten American forces and commercial shipping passing through the strategic waterway.

According to Axios, US Central Command prepared a plan for limited military action during the past week. Three US officials said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has supported the proposal.

The plan had not received approval from President Donald Trump before the latest clashes between US and Iranian forces, according to the report.

However, US officials said the renewed military confrontation could prompt Trump to consider authorising the proposed operation.

One US official said the main objective would be to prevent Iran from restoring its missile and radar capabilities and to reduce the potential threat to US and commercial vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz.

US officials are concerned that Iran could reactivate military systems positioned around the waterway after suffering damage during previous attacks.

Washington believes rebuilt missile and radar installations could potentially be used against oil tankers, US Navy vessels and American aircraft operating in the region.

One official reportedly compared the proposed strategy to repeatedly “mowing the grass”, referring to limited and periodic strikes designed to prevent an adversary from rebuilding military capabilities.

The approach would therefore focus on maintaining pressure on Iranian military infrastructure rather than launching a full-scale new war.

A White House official told Axios that President Trump has all options available regarding Iran.

The official also said Tehran wants to reach an agreement but argued that Iran has repeatedly delayed making decisions.

The comments indicate that Washington is keeping both diplomatic and military options on the table as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue.

US officials have described the proposed operation as a limited military measure rather than an attempt to initiate a broader conflict.

The objective would be to restrict Iran’s military capabilities around the Strait of Hormuz while reducing risks to commercial and military shipping.

However, any new US strikes against Iranian targets could trigger another Iranian response and further intensify the confrontation.

The latest developments have already raised concerns that the recent exchange of attacks between Washington and Tehran could develop into a wider military escalation, with the strategically important Strait of Hormuz remaining one of the most sensitive flashpoints in the region.
