Double Standards of Justice in India, Dalits Suffer Under Modi

Dalits in India continue to face caste-based discrimination, injustice and social exclusion despite the country’s constitutional promise of equality.

The treatment of Dalits has raised questions about the Indian government’s claims of promoting social justice under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to UCA News, the continued denial of equal rights to Dalits reflects the caste-based discrimination that remains present in Indian society. The constitutional promise of equality has remained difficult to achieve for millions of Dalits because of discrimination based on caste.

UCA News reported that more than 57,000 cases of violence against Dalits were registered in India in 2022, with more than 15,000 cases reported in Uttar Pradesh.

The report also highlighted concerns that cases involving women from higher castes often receive greater attention, while atrocities against Dalits may not receive the same response.

Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has also alleged that elements linked to the BJP openly promote discriminatory attitudes against Dalits.

The situation of Dalits continues to raise concerns about equality and social justice in India, where caste-based discrimination remains a major issue.
