Air-Raid Alerts Sound Across Kyiv as Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire Ends

Air-raid alerts have sounded across Kyiv and neighboring areas as a three-day pause in attacks between Russia and Ukraine came to an end. The temporary halt coincided with the visit of US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who traveled to Moscow and Kyiv in an effort to revive stalled peace negotiations. Russian President Vladimir Putin held what the US side described as constructive talks with the American envoys in Moscow before they traveled to Ukraine for discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Following the talks, Witkoff said “substantive progress” had been made, including movement toward scheduling additional trilateral negotiations. Zelensky, meanwhile, said he expected the United States to provide Ukrainian forces with substantial quantities of weapons and ammunition. He warned that if the conflict continued into winter, Ukraine would require what he called a “winter package” of military assistance.

With the temporary suspension of attacks ending after the US envoys departed Kyiv, Russian and Ukrainian forces resumed strikes involving ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. Ukrainian officials said six people were wounded and buildings were damaged, while Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that people had been trapped inside a building and that the attacks had triggered fires in several parts of the capital. In recent months, Ukraine has also intensified its use of domestically produced drones to conduct attacks against targets deep inside Russian territory.
