Iran Launches Missile Barrage at US Base in Jordan After Attacks on Oil Tankers

TEHRAN: Iran has launched a fresh wave of missile attacks in retaliation for US strikes on five Iranian oil tankers, with the latest escalation further intensifying tensions between Tehran and Washington.

According to Russian media reports, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Iranian missiles targeted two US Navy destroyers, while hangars housing American F-35 and F-15 fighter jets at a US military base in Jordan were also hit.

Iranian media reported that the IRGC launched ballistic missiles against the US military base at Al-Azraq in Jordan following the American strikes on the Iranian oil tankers.

The IRGC said the retaliatory operation inflicted significant damage on what it described as the enemy and represented a response to recent US attacks.

Jordanian authorities confirmed that Iran launched a total of 20 missiles toward the country.

According to the Jordanian military, its air-defence systems intercepted 18 missiles while two others fell in unpopulated areas outside residential zones.

The reported interceptions came after Iranian forces announced retaliatory operations against US military positions in the region.

The latest escalation follows a US Central Command announcement that American forces had destroyed five Iranian crude-oil tankers.

CENTCOM said the operation came after what Washington described as two attempts by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to target a US warship with ballistic missiles over a two-day period.

The US military said the American warship successfully intercepted the missile threats and that no US personnel were injured.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Navy has reportedly warned crews aboard oil tankers docked at ports in Kuwait and Bahrain to leave vessels located in areas where American personnel are stationed.

The warning reflects growing concerns that commercial shipping and energy infrastructure could become increasingly caught up in the expanding US-Iran confrontation.

The Strait of Hormuz and surrounding Gulf waters remain particularly sensitive as military operations continue to affect oil transportation and maritime security.

The latest exchange of attacks has significantly increased fears of a wider regional confrontation.

US strikes against Iranian oil tankers, followed by Iranian missile attacks on American military facilities, could further expand the geographic scope of the conflict and place additional pressure on Gulf states hosting US forces.

The developments also raise concerns for global energy markets, as attacks on oil tankers and military threats around key maritime routes could disrupt crude supplies and increase volatility in international oil prices.

With both Washington and Tehran signalling that they are prepared to respond to further attacks, the risk of a broader military escalation across the Middle East continues to rise.
